Lakeland still has lots of wild and secluded places to be found, if you know where to look. Escape the crowds and head south with us for stunning coastlines, wildlife and bird sanctuaries, castles and stately homes, world-renowned gardens, romantic priories and churches, and much more.
About the Tour
Drop in at Grange-over-Sands, a pretty Victorian seaside town, with ornamental gardens and the famous Hazelmere tearooms, or head straight for Ulverston, a market town with a surprising amount of history.
Ulverston is packed full of cultural heritage, including Swarthmoor Hall – an Elizabethan manor house that was home temporarily in the mid-1660s to George Fox, founder of the Quaker movement – and Coronation Hall, built to commemorate the coronation of George V.
Watch Downton Abbey glassware being made, walk along England’s shortest, widest and deepest canal, or visit one of the largest Buddhist communities in Europe.
Don’t miss the stunning views of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District from the lighthouse at the top of Hoad Hill.
Alternatively, if you want more of the great outdoors, the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has everything you could want for a magical day out.
Look for wild birds, otters, red deer and butterflies at Leighton Moss in Silverdale, fairies on the Faery Steps at Beetham, or geological time itself on the limestone pavement at Gaitbarrow.
When you need refreshment, stop for a picnic, food in a quirky local pub, delicious dessert in a village teashop or fish and chips by the sea. Sample local delicacies like saltmarsh lamb, Cartmel sticky pudding, or Morecambe Bay shrimp.
Or how about ending the day with one of our many local beers or Lyth Valley damson gin and perhaps a “brief encounter” in the Snug at Carnforth?
